Stormy Day Yosemite National Park California When we got back to the campsite after hiking Nevada Falls we were pretty wet, hungry, and frozen. To warm up we decided to go to Curry Village and get some coffee, hot-chocolate, and just roam around the store and pick up some souvenirs. My friend offered to drive (which I thought was silly) but his car was going to be super warm and we needed to thaw, so I took him up on his offer. Unfortunately, there was a HUGE line of traffic from people trying to leave early on Saturday evening. I think we sat in line for about 30 minutes just trying to move the 0.2miles to Curry Village. At one point I got sick of waiting in the car so I got out, took my camera, and decided to see if maybe everything was stopped because of a bear (there was no bear, it was just a lot of traffic). As I was walking along the road just outside of the Pines campground and just next to Curry Village, I looked up and saw some *amazing* clouds over Yosemite Falls. They made just enough of an opening for Yosemite Falls to peak through it. I immediately put my camera to my eye and snapped away!
Going back into the archives and editing some older photos. I'm giving Nik Software's Silver Efex software a try and thought I'd find a couple water photos to make into B&W's. I liked how the B&W brought out the shape/texture of the water in this. Every year I head to Yosemite in May or a weekend of camping. Usually the weather is perfect: 80 degrees F, clear skies and very pleasant to hike in. Unfortunately in 2010 (and the again in 2011) the cold weather stuck around for extra long. In fact, in 2010 when I took this photo it was SNOWING on us … in May … in California! Although it was freezing out, the hike was actually pretty spectacular. On our way up to Nevada Falls (pictured here) there was TONS of water everywhere -- you'll notice there's all these little "extra" waterfalls that are gushing over the side of the cliff and the river was *movin*. The snow storm also made for some really neat cloud shapes. On the downside, I think my girlfriend froze and now refuses to join me on my trips to Yosemite in May. Oh well. El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Falls on a Cloudy Day Taken on May 21, 2010 at Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park, CA This was my 5th year coming to Yosemite and I've never made it to the "Tunnel View" made famous by Ansel Adams. At about 7pm we drove up Tunnel View hoping to get a sunset shot of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Falls. Unfortunately, the sun/clouds didn't play nice and it just looked kinda gloomy (I was really hoping for a nice red reflection off the rocks). Instead, I brought out the D80 with the 70-300mm lens on it and shot this photo of Half Dome and Bridalveil Falls. I was actually surprised by the fact that 70mm (on a DX digital sensor) was too long of a focal length for this scene. Even when I kept backing up and backup up I could *not* get El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil in the scene. My 35mm lens wasn't quite long enough for what I wanted and I no longer have a lens that goes between 35mm and 70mm. 45mm would have been perfect for this scene
Mirror Lake Reflections of Mt. Watkins Taken on May 21, 2010 in Yosemite National Park, California We got to Mirror Lake at abotu 5pm and the sun was starting to set. It made a really nice line of shadow across the mountains/trees but the lighting was pretty difficult still (not even). There were a couple other photographers there and we had to fight for tripod space. All of them were shooting multiple exposures and although I really *didn't* want to do an HDR here, the lighting was just too varied (too dark in the trees/water) and I found myself really attracted to the HDR versions. Here you can see Mt. Watkins reflected in Mirror Lake. It's getting harder and harder to get the reflections in this lake because it's losing its mirror effect. In the old days the park rangers / hotels used to dredge this lake for Ice (for the hotels) and salt (for the roads) and that helped create the reflection effect. However, now the park wants to stay "all natural" and dredging has stopped, which has decreased its reflectivity. I had to pull out the polarizer to get better reflections (note: if you go here, I highly highly recommend a polarizer. It really really helped increase the awesome reflection).
