California Forests
Fern Line
Sunrise in the Redwood Grove Redwood State Park, Humboldt, CA Different Redwood forests all have different characteristics in spring. Some Forrests have beautiful rhododendron blooms, while others have carpets of sorrel fields (similar to clovers), and some just have beautiful green and red contrasting colors. We came to Humboldt for the carpets of sorrel mixed with ferns. David flew into San Francisco, we picked him up, and drove 5 hours north to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It has some of the biggest and oldest Redwood trees in California and they're truly breathtaking when you stand in the groves. The previous evening we had tried to photograph sunset in the forest but the mosquitos were so bad that we ended up running back to the car for protection and gave up. Oh well. Our final morning we visited this particular grove which was known for sorrel and ferns, and sure enough the forrest was stunning. We could have photographed the grove for hours, had the sun not risen too high and started adding spotlights to the trees we were trying to photograph. In this scene, I loved how the ferns lined up in a row as if they were leading you down a path into the Redwood grove. Nikon D800 w/Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8: 15mm, f/10, 5 sec, ISO 100
