Kissed by Lawrence
Sunrise over Mt. Lawrence Banff National Park, Canada I had long wanted to visit the Canadian Rockies and Willie and I finally made it happen one November. It’s very easy to fall in love with the area and not only were we blown about by the sights, but just about everything ... from the people, to the food, to the low crowds. Everything was awesome. I returned a few months later to ski. And I new I had to return in the summer when I could explore some more in better hiking weather. Sammi and I flew to Banff for American’s 4th of July weekend. We quickly learned it was all “Canada Day” that weekend as well. Despite what we assumed would be “massive crowds”, the entire weekend was actually quite lovely and devoid of most people when not in Banff proper. Our plan to hike tons and tons of trails was ambitious and we quickly learned it wasn’t going to happen. We spent so much time driving, stopping, walking around ... drive a little more, stop, walk around ... repeat, that we never really got all the huge hiking in. Of course there were the bears too (or at least the ones Sammi was afraid of). Because it was such a crowded weekend we opted to get a hotel in Canmore, about 15 minutes south-east of Banff, in a beautiful resort that overlooked “The Three Sisters”, a beautiful range of 3 mountain peaks. Just to the west lies this mountain, Mt. Lawrence Grassi. Most of our days had clear skies (or too thick clouds) but on our final morning, I walked out to the balcony and saw this scene enveloping. I quickly grabbed the camera and fired a few snaps before the sun rose and the glow disappeared. Nikon D800 w/Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8: 185mm, f/11, 1/40 sec, ISO 160
