Bubblegum
Methane Bubbles Frozen in Johnson Lake Banff National Park, Canada A few hours from Banff lies the most popular lake known for having frozen air bubbles: Abraham Lake. It was a bit far and Willie and I had no plans to photograph frozen lake bubbles during this trip. Sometimes though, you find yourself in for a nice surprise! We had spent the afternoon scouting Johnson Lake, hoping that we might be able to catch a sunset or sunrise from the banks of the lake. Ice-skaters enjoyed the frozen lake while we explored. We found a potential spot for sunset and waited, hoping a hole would develop in the clouds and let some sunset light in. Very quickly it became clear that the clouds weren't going to give us any opening - we were going to need to do something different. The skaters disappeared as it got closer to sunset and that gave us the chance to hop onto the ice ourselves, and explore. That's when we looked down and saw BUBBLES! The bubbles on Johnson Lake aren't the iconic massive layers of bubbles that Abraham Lake is known for, but alas, there were bubbles! The hard part was finding a spot that hadn't been entirely ruined by the ice-skaters and was clear enough of snow to photograph. I waited for a gust of wind to blow snow over the background ice to give the photo some movement and interest in the midground. Perhaps one day I'll venture to Abraham and see real bubbles!
