Dettifoss Waterfall Mývatn, Iceland Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe (Iceland is in Europe if you weren't aware ... I wasn't at least initially). One might think that Icelands most powerful waterfalls would be situated towards the south, in its highlands or by the glacial melt but instead it is in the north, in the geothermal area. We arrived on a dreadful morning. It was cold and wet. Pouring to be exact. The walk out to Dettifoss isn't very long but when you're walking on slick lava rock you get fed up pretty quickly, especially when the "trail" is a giant lake and you have to blaze your own path. We didn't stay long and we skipped the perhaps even more beautiful Selfoss waterfalls, which left me sad for many days afterwards. I was pretty nervous getting this close to the edge with all the rain and slick rock around. If I slipped I was gone -- there's just too much water spewing. Not sure if they'd even find my body ever. Luckily I made it back to the RV where we took off and drove to a wonderful Whale Museum and spent the rest of the day indoors and dry! Nikon D800 w/Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8: 17mm, f/10, 1/3 sec, ISO 100
