Spotlit
Sunrise on Aspen trees Uncompahgre National Forest, Colorado As I prepared for my Colorado fall colors trip with my coworker Ana, I asked my friend David if I should bring the "bazooka" lens (my ultra-telephoto). He looked at me as if I was an idiot for asking. *OF COURSE* I should bring it. I'm glad I did because some of my favorite photos were taken with the super telephoto lens. This one included. Ana and I spent a couple days in Breckenridge and Crested Butte before spending the rest of our time in the San Juan mountains. On this particular morning we had scouted a county road for fall colors. We had seen a pretty epic view the night before but it really needed clouds in the sky to make it work. On this particular sunrise there wasn't a cloud in the sky. We photographed the grand scene but it was just missing something, so I put the wide angle lens away and waited for the sun to strike the Aspen trees. As it came up I could see this particular grove of Aspen trees was able to be baked in warm beautiful light, so I grabbed that super telephoto lens and waited for the light to hit it. I loved how it spotlit the yellow Aspen trees. I photographed this for about 30 minutes and watched as the light changed every minute, lighting more and more of the trees, until the whole scene was blown out by too much light.
