Every time I drive through Portola Valley at night I get a glimpse of the old Alpine Inn building all lit up with the neon lights but cars are always parked out front. When the bar closes for the night they usually turn off the neon lights. Occasionally they leave the lights on after they close but I never have my camera with me. Finally, on the way home from celebrating a wonderful Boxing Day evening at the Nuttals I had my camera and the lights were left on and I was able to snap this photo!

Garden GuardSpider Menlo Park, California I've been trying to grow a garden on my balcony using planter pots. I've got cherry tomaters, heirloom tomaters, basil, and zucchini growing out there (and they're doing quid well!). My sugar snap pea's came and gone and my thyme just never made it in time (poor pun, I'm sorry. At least my grandfather might enjoy it?) I went out this morning to water the plants and I noticed this giant (ok, so pretty teeny tiny) spider with a neat spider web growing in between the tomato plants. I was *about* to destroy the web when I realized "This will make a *GREAT* photo!" I ended up spending 30 minutes shooting it from different angles and ended up late to work (oh well, it's ok because work is flexible) This one may possibly be my favorite photo of the 6 shots that I ended up happy with. I love how the lines of the spider web draw the eye into the awesome detail on the spider. I experimented with different apertures and I was surprised that even at f/10 there's some blurring on the legs -- still, I think this came out great!
