Velika Prstavac Waterfall
Plitvice National Park, Croatia
Sammi and I spent nearly a week and a half in Slovenia before making our way to Croatia. Slovenia was the "tiring" part of the trip while Croatia was the "relaxing" portion. We hiked nearly every day in Slovenia, then went wine tasting and made our way to Croatia where it became beach time! Tania met up with us in Croatia so we could relax and visit the waterfall parks.
We had 2 glorious days on the beach in Croatia before heading to the waterfall parks. In hindsight I wish we had 2 more days on the beaches but that's what hindsight is for. Shrug. 1 less day in Slovenia and 1 less day at the waterfalls is recommended! The drive from the beach to Plitvice National Park was interesting: we started along the coast, slowly made our way inland, and eventually found ourselves on a very windy small road through the middle of no-where. It wasn't what I expected for going to a place that gets 1 million visitors a year -- I expected a major road. Instead I felt we were being taken through the smallest roads in existence.
We arrived at Plitvice in the evening, got settled, and planned a course of attack for the next morning. Sammi, Tania and I woke early and made sure we were at the entrance to the park when it opened. It was a cloudy morning so we didn't have to rush to get there before sunrise. I know I wanted to visit Velika Prstavac first, so we took the ferry across one of the lakes and then hiked up to this viewpoint. We made it here before anyone else was around -- an hour or two later and that boardwalk at the bottom of the photo would be crammed with people. I liked this vantage point because it shows you the beautiful waterfall, surrounded by greenery, but also captures some of the lakes and how man and nature can exist in balance for an amazingly beautiful scene.
